DESCRIPTION

his magnificent painting presents the same lion in profile, and the side view reveals a completely different emotional dimension — where the frontal lion confronted us with raw power, this one carries a sense of noble, contemplative dignity. The vivid electric blue dominates the facial structure in sweeping, confident contours, weaving against the fiery yellows and oranges of the flowing mane in a color interplay that feels dynamic and alive against the deep magenta background. The profile perspective allows the artist to showcase the lion's powerful jaw, brow, and mane in a composition that feels almost like a portrait of royalty — regal, self-possessed, and utterly assured. The mane cascades down the left side of the canvas in glorious flame-like tendrils of orange, yellow, and black, the flowing linework at its most expressive and free here, contrasting beautifully with the tighter, more structured linework of the face. Together with the frontal lion, this piece forms what feels like a magnificent diptych — two perspectives on the same majestic subject that together capture the full complexity of the lion's character, from untamed ferocity to serene, timeless authority.

Influenced by German Expressionism and artists like Franz Marc and Vincent van Gogh, Haddox often uses animals and human figures to explore themes of love, identity, and connection. As a Black American artist shaped by different cultures and countries, his work reflects both personal experiences and broader social ideas.

Instead of working in a traditional studio, Haddox often paints in public spaces such as cafés, where the surrounding energy and interaction become part of his creative process. His art invites viewers to see unity instead of division and to reflect on the power of connection.
