DESCRIPTION
Incognitus – Travelling by Superbike occupies the intersection of signs, identity, and the spirit of our time.
Its multilayered visual language can be related to the semiotic theories of Umberto Eco, for whom signs are never fixed or unambiguous. Instead, their meaning emerges through the interplay of cultural context, perception, and interpretation.
The figure of "Incognitus" appears as an anonymous, vibrant, and fashion-conscious visage of contemporary society. Hidden behind sunglasses and an exaggerated hairstyle is not an individual portrait but an archetype of the modern human being. Clothing, accessories, and personal attributes function as signs of a mobile, globalized existence. The bicycle basket, the wine and water bottles bearing Georgian inscriptions, and the vehicle's unconventional design all point simultaneously to origin, movement, and cultural exchange. The local and the international converge within a single figure.
Particular attention is drawn to the bicycle's wheels. Far removed from technical reality, they appear as visionary constructions—symbols of perpetual invention and reinvention. They evoke prototypes of a future in which innovation and constant transformation have become fundamental conditions of life. The bicycle is thus transformed into an imagined superbike: less a means of transportation than a conceptual model of restless modernity.
The figure's powerful legs convey stability and forward momentum, while the person remains deliberately anonymous. The work focuses not on individual identity but on the universal condition of being in transit. A striking lock resembling a bundle of keys alludes to access, control, and mystery. It may be understood as a symbol of the countless doors that open—or remain closed—throughout the course of a lifetime.
An additional layer of meaning arises from the support itself. The work is executed on a used paper portfolio whose original holes, marks, and traces of use have been intentionally preserved. These openings reveal glimpses of an unknown surface beneath. Although invisible, this hidden foundation appears more enduring and permanent than the visible image itself, creating a dialogue between presence and absence, visibility and speculation.
Hovering above the composition is an enigmatic sun-like form that may also be read as a basket, a burden, or a celestial body. Like many elements within the work, it resists a single interpretation, inviting viewers to construct their own meanings.
Incognitus – Travelling by Superbike condenses the contemporary world of signs into a poetic allegory of the modern individual: travelling between origin and future, identity and anonymity, visible surfaces and hidden meanings. In doing so, the work itself becomes a visage—a face of our time.
