DESCRIPTION
Siesta is a traditional midday rest associated with Mediterranean countries' hot climates and customs. It symbolizes moments of peace and contemplation when daily worries pause and one finds harmony with the surrounding world.
The painting Siesta by Elena Schumakher conveys this atmosphere through its expressive color palette and symbolism.
The artwork is imbued with shades of blue, green, and muted brown, evoking associations with Greek culture: the warm sky, the sea, and nature. At the center of the composition is a white female figure, which might be a statuette—referencing ancient Greek marble sculptures—or part of an elegant meal.
Her posture and soft contours create a sense of tranquility, reinforcing the concept of siesta.
